CHAMBERLAIN REVEALS FEELINGS ON JAPANESE ATROCITIES IN CHINA

Speaking in the foreign affairs debate in the Com- mons immediately after Mr. Noel Baker, who opened for the Opposition, the Prime Minister said he thought there would be general agree- ment with the remarks which had fallen from Mr. Baker upon the horrors of modern war and about the practice of bombing from air. "Indeed," said Mr. Chamberlain, "if it were not that China is so far away and the scenes taking place there so remote from our everyday con- sciousness, I think the sentiments of pity, of horror and of indignation which would be aroused by the full perception of these events, might drive this people to courses which per- haps they have never yet contemplated."
