Lancashire Hold The Australians

LEAD

London, To-day. Providing they maintain the same form throughout the match, Lancashire stand... an excellent chance of lowering the Australians' colours for the first time on the present tour.

The Australians batted first, but were dismissed for 303 runs to which A. L. Hassett contributed 118, Phillipson taking 5 wickets for 93 runs.

Lancashire, although they failed to pass the Tourists first innings total, were not far behind at the close of play and were' all out for 289, Oldfield topping the batting with 69, Paynter, the England Test player who scored 217 against the Australians in the recent Test match, being dismissed for only 9

runs.
