REDUCED TO RUINS

(From Our Staff Correspondent)

Canton, Thursday. Canton's new power plant at Saichuen is definitely out of action for at least six months, and pos- sibly a year.

In a check-up I made to-day of the plant, of which the two chimneys and outer walls are still standing, I found that the entire interior of the building has been destroyed.

The whole surrounding countryside is pitted with large bomb craters, old and new, and with the exception of troops and employees of the new waterworks, the district is abandoned.

I paid another visit to the water- works, and there and found Mr. "Spud" Murphy, hero of two raids, still at his post.

Mr. Murphy showed me round, and I inspected with awe, tinged with much respect for this Briton who has refused to leave his post, a series of yawning chasms which marked bombs which had fallen since my previous visit.

Mr. Murphy is a philosopher. "They haven't got me yet," he said, "and I don't see why my luck shouldn't continue."

THE EXPERT

An expert on air raids by now, Mr. Murphy told me that as much as he disliked the raids, what he hated most was the feeling of be- ing, absolutely alone and, at night, in complete darkness.

He has managed to save several pieces of valuable apparatus but except for those the whole place is in ruins.

I later inspected. Mr. Murphy's bedroom, where he somewhat ruefully showed me a large gap where a steel fragment had altered considerably the appearance of the

wall.

I left Saichuen with the feeling that although bombs may come, and others are sure to follow, Mr. Mur- phy will still be there, bearing a charmed life.
