TREATY TALKS BROKEN QUEEN'S

OFF: LONDON CONCERN

London, To-day.` Although it is considered unavoidable that Anglo- American trade negotiations will be postpon- ed, it appears that circles here do not consider this in a very serious light.

It is pointed out that such a result is inevitable in view of the thousands of knotty problems to be considered and that the negotiations would be resumed sooner or later. In any case, the dif- ficulties arose from purely technical reasons, particularly from the domestic political consi- deration of the American Government, it is stressed.

GRISLY SIDE OF CANTON TERROR

The postponement of further ne- gotiation by no means points to any fundamental alteration in the attitude of Britain or the United States. In spite of all attempts to regard the situation calmly, it is. impossible to hide the fact that the turn things have taken is at least. for the British Government a bit-1 ter disappointment. When the Bri- tish delegation left for Washing ton last February it was declared that a treaty would be concluded and only last week, the Mr. Oliver Stanley stated in the House of Coramons how very important the| British Government regarded the successful conclusion of a treaty If the delegation returns empty- handed from Washington, and there is not much possibility, of the ne- gotiations being finalised this year, then the failure can scarcely be regarded as a matter of little im portance. The negotiations are extremely important not only from the economic point of view but also and possibly to greater extent from

MAND. treaty was considered a bridge to closer co-operation with the Unit ed States and in connection there with a treaty with Washingto would considerably strengthen th: diplomatic position of the Britis Government. For the time being nothing has come from all these hopes which is, at least, for Mr Neville Chamberlain a bitter pill which is certainly not made easier to swallow when consider- ing that the development of things is to be blamed to the anxiety c the American Government regard ing the losing of votes at the nex elections.-Trans-Ocean.
