THE SCIENCE OF CONTRACT BRIDGE

Bidding at Contract Bridge is an exact science, and in order to get the best results it is necessary for a partnership to follow a well- devised system. Any partnership which disregards systems and bids along what it terms "common- sense" lines is bound to end on the rocks before it has weathered perhaps even a single storm.

The best system at Contract is the one which results in securing the largest percentage of makable games and Slams coupled with suffering the minimum number of sizable penalties. Deception is an indispensable part of any good bidding system, for by its use de- fensive play is made more difficult and the opportunities to inflict penalties are enhanced.

In my opinion, the deceptive feature of the system advocated, by the Four Aces is one of its strongest assets.

The crucial of any system is its ability to survive when used in gruelling competition over a period of time. Theories may be beautiful and well devised, but in games, as in life, it is practical results which count.

The tournament record of the Four Aces during the past two years is known everywhere.

Prince Michael quietened them with the remark: "Despite every- thing, I will marry Jeannette

Hardly were these words pub- ished than his name was dragged into headlines again this time not by romance. But by tragedy.

A shot had been heard in a Bayswater boarding-house. A girl had been found dying Mary Atkinson, former secretary of this Polish aristocrat.

DENIED RENDEZVOUS The inquest found the Prince criticised by the coroner.

It was stated he had left Mary Atkinson "stranded" without money, without answering her let- ters, in Nazi-ridden Danzig. There, it was added, he was to have joined her, but failed to do so.

Later came his own version-- a denial,

Miss Atkinson, he said, flew to Danzig with. a Pole she was to marry.

he

Prince Michael also denied had arranged to meet her, adding there had never been any question of his marrying Mary Atkinson, nor that she had guaranteed his debts.

The Prince is described in the notice of marriage as the divorced husband of Joaquina Radziwill, formerly Santa Suzana de Medi- nilla. His address is a Brighton

hotel.

of

Mrs. Dawson is the widow Stewart Dawson, the well-known goldsmith.

She stated yesterday they had known each other for six months. "We met in the South of France at Monte Carlo," she said.

When Prince Michael decided to marry Mme. Suchestov he adopt- ed her six-year-old son.

Then the Radziwill family oppos- ed the marriage and the adoption.

Warsaw Courts deprived him of his right to manage his. huge es- tates.

His income in Poland was said to be £50,000.
