EVICTION CLAIM AFTER ALLEGED RENT INCREASE
An action to recover possession of the ground floor_of_No. 96 Lai Chi Kok Road, was brought before Mr. Acting Justice Williams at the Supreme Court this morning.
Compainant is Messrs. Wing Fat, represented by Mr. E. S. C. Brooks, and defendant is Kai Chan.
On the inquiry of His Lordship, it was ascertained that the pre- mises
were used for an eating house and therefore the case did not come under the new Preven- tion of Evictions Ordinance.
Mr. Brooks said that defendant had been served with a notice to quit on April 9, giving until May 18. Defendant was still in posses- sion.
Asked why he had not vacated the premises, defendant said that on May 14, when the rent collector visited him, the latter agreed to. his staying on at an increase of $8.00 a month. His original rent, . said defendant, was $30.00 per month. It had been increased first. by $10.00 and then by the $8.00 mentioned and now stood at $48.00.
After defendant had produced. his rent receipts, the case was ad- journed until June 17,
