KNOWLEDGEBEE'
"Spelling Bees," which have re- cently been broadcast in England, beginning with a contest between British and American students and graduates, have now been succeed- ed by the "General Knowledge Bee."
Four Yorkshire schoolchildren opposed four Lancashire school- children in a "General Knowledge Bee" broadcast at Leeds by the B.B.C., the first contest of its kind to be put on the air.
The Yorkshire youngsters won a close contest by 20 points to 19.- The rules were: 10 seconds for each child to think of the answer and give it; the striking of a gong when a Yorkshire contestant was wrong and the blowing of a whistle when a Lancashire child failed. A B.B.C. official put the questions.
The question which lost Lan- cashire the match was: "Who was known as the Virgin Queen?" Derek, a 14-year-old Bolton boy re- plied "Mary," and was then beaten by 14-year-old Barbara of Bradford, who confidently replied "Eliza- beth."
Questions which went unanswer- ed included: "What is the full name for spats? What colour is a live lobster? and, What does B.B.C. stand for?"

"If,"
," he added, "all the world could be induced to play cricket in the British spirit it would lead to- a better understanding among the nations.
