The "Silver Sax Six" is a ladies saxaphone band led by Miss Nita Dalton. They are now appearing at Mar- gate and believe in keeping fit as well as in tune. They can often be seen rehearsing on the beach, clad in bathing costumes. (Copyright).

AUTHORS AND INSPIRATION

ECENTLY there has been a

subject of inspiration, as it affects modern authors. The results are interesting.

It is revealed that Sir Philip Gibbs has never been aware of any direct inspiration while writ- ing; that H. G. Wells has no ideas on the matter; and several other authors are sure that their works were the result of personal effort.”

Here it might be well to men- tion a definition of inspiration. "It is suggested that inspiration is a real thing, that it comes from outside the human instrument which uses it."

Of those novelists who believe there is something in that de- finition, Hugh Walpole tells us that when he read over his novel, "The Old Ladies," he did not know where the story had come from or why he had been driven to write on such a subject. "The whole thing was very mysterious."

Hall Caine dreamed the plot of "The Woman of Knockaloe” three times in one night, and "was un- der compulsion to write the story.” Of one of his books, Robert Blatchford says: "I wrote as if. from dictation. I was 'inspired.' Oh, yes. The sub-mind inspired

me.

What is the sub-mind? I have not the least idea."

Arnold Bennett considered that inspiration was "an unexplained phenomenon. One becomes used to it."

G. K. Chesterton "leaned to- wards a belief in inspiration, but added humorously, "Personally, however, I would rather take the responsibility of my own dreadful works myself.'

BUY AS CAREFULLY AS WILLARD BUILDS

No battery is built more carefully than a Willard. In fact, every Willard Battery must pass 74 inspections before it leaves the plant. That's one big reason why Willard Batteries so consistently outlive and out-per- form ordinary batteries.

When you buy your next battery, choose carefully. Other batteries may look as good as a Willard; but don't jump to the conclusion that like appearance means like performance. Find out what's INSIDE the battery before you buy.
