British Walker Cup Team Criticised

WHEN the American

Cup team face their British opponents in May this year they will meet a team of golfers whose selection has been the subject of much discussion.

Many golf enthusiasts criticised the trial team selections, and the changes in the team do not seem to have settle:

For instance, "British golfers are going to be tougher to beat than ever before," according to the U. S. Ama- teur Champion, Johnny Goodman, who is a member of the visiting team this

year.

Pinfarthings will be ridden by Mr. Proulx, and but for the fact that it is' shy of the gate, I would nominate it for a win. This pony can move very fast, and if Mr. Proulx can get it off quickly, it will give both Handicap Eve and Expression Time a good run.

*This race will be contested by Aus- tralian ponies of any season, and I am afraid that the presence of Strathroy will rob it of its interest. The latter pony should have no difficulty in, win- ning despite its burden of 165 lbs., which, after all, is nothing unusual, as it has won races before carrying the same weight.

For to-morrow, however, it will be conceding a good deal of handicap to some of the other more dangerous con- tenders, and in some instances there is more than 20 lbs, difference in weight. The negro world heavyweight cham- pion and the former German titleholder were officially contracted to fight on June 22, but not before the Commission had announced that Schmeling definitely defend his title in the United States in September if he beats the "Brown Bomber."

This decision shattered the hopes of the German to carry the title home and defend either at Berlin or Ham- burg, where he could name his own purse, terms and opponent.

2

The Commission obviously took the step in order to prevent the United States from losing its stranglehold on the bigtime heavyweight battles.

The decision also created great deal of interest among boxing follow- ers since it means that there will be at least one more world heavyweight championship fight in the United States after the June 22 battle.

The Commission made no mention of a possible opponent for the German should Schmeling win.
