DEFENDERS OF HSUCHOW STILL IN CONTROL

No Intention Of Withdrawing From Zone

Extreme Alarm

Declared To Be Unjustified

Hankow, To-day. The Chinese, who hitherto have not admitted cut- ting of the Lunghai Railway by the Japanese, last night claimed that their troops were suc- cessful in several clashes.

It is officially stated that the forces defending Hsu- chow are still in control, and that there is no in- tention of withdrawing.

While deep anxiety prevails over the situation at Hsuchow, the Chinese military authorities em- phasise that extreme alarm is unjustified.- Reuter.
