How President Roosevelt participated in a drama- tic errand of mercy on the high seas, is told in radiograms received here from the cruiser "Philadelphia," in which the President has been on a holiday cruise to the Bahamas. The cruiser picked up, a radiogram from the Nor- wegian freighter "Marathon," asking for im- mediate medical assistance for an injured
seaman.
The "Philadelphia," which was 50 miles away, immediately turned and steamed at full speed to the spot.

EIGHT DEAD
Shanghai, To-day. Eight are dead, more than ten women and children are missing and approximately 10,000 are homeless, as the re- sult of a big fire in Chungking yesterday morning, according
to the Chinese press.
The fire, described as the biggest in ten years, was start- ed by the fall of a kerosene lamp in a warehouse where
straw was stored.
The blaze, which extended over an area of nearly a mile, was finally controlled after prolonged efforts by the fire brigades.
It was
later revealed that over 100 sustained injuries.- Reuter.
