The standard of play in the inter-f national bridge matches has in Lon- don so far shown a marked advance on that of last year. England showed great skill on part-score hands and in bidding on minimum values. The slam bidding on both sides was poor. The English once again showed them- selves definitely weak in this depart- ment of the game. They did not score a single slam bonus. These successes were offset, however, by several others No No that they bid but could not make.

Here is an example of how the Eng- land team out-manoeuvred their ponents by minimum bidding:
