A. Spanish insurgent cruiser, ac- companied by other warships, yesterday intercepted and sank several fishingboats laden with Government. troops. trying to reach Valencia.
All the men in the boats were drowned Reuter.
The reason? Well, from the Mint's point of view everything seemed to happen at once.
The main cause of the terrific the pressure of work recently is unprecedented demand for coina reflection of this country's commer- cial prosperity. Millions more coins have now been put into circulation.
In 1936 the Mint struck 334,000,- 000 coins. That was easily a re- cord-35,000,000 more than the pre- vious highest figure, in 1921.
Although exact official figures are not yet available for last year, it is understood that they soar even higher than the 1936 record. And coin is still being turned put in huge quantities..
The armaments programme has of its reflections in the activities the Mint More coin is needed for the payment of wages to the huge number of men employed in all. branches of the work

But the Mint comes into it in an--
As in the war days, the Mint has been. called in to make various delicate instruments, principally weighing machines, necessary for certain de- partiments of armament work
There is weighing apparatus used. for the exact measurement of the ingredients of cartridges Strict accuracy is required here, and the plant at the Mint is admirably suit- ed to fine working.
The Mint's big rush really.. be-- gan with the Accession of King Ed- ward VIIL New dies had to be struck, for many parts of the Em- pire as well as this country. The Abdication meant the scrapping of 200 dies for coins, medals and seals.
AND THREEPENNY BITS
Then there was the new KingTM George VI. coinage-new dies to be made and millions of coing to be struck and the Coronation medals. The Mint is only now getting the additional work entailed Coronation
The new type of piece, too, brought a great additional work
More than 30,000,000 been struck up to the year, but
