SWIFT PROGRESS WITH A SOVIET MAGINOT LINE. THIRTY MILES DEEP AND STRETCHING FROM THE BAL- TIC TO THE BLACK SEA. IS REPORTED FROM MOSCOW.
The whole area is stated to be completely mined, and military engineers are completing electri- fication of the Esthonian and Ru- manian sectors.
The zone is served by electric stations and in case of invasion, thousands of square miles could be blown up by depression of a dozen electric buttons.

With the approach of the budget debate in the House of Commons, interested circles are discussing the possibility of tax increases.
It is generally believed that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, who will present the budget on April 26, will not pro- pose an increase of direct taxation to meet the financial requirements of the British Government.
