Death Of Fyodor Chaliapin:

Remarkable Career

Paris, To-day.

Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin, the world famous Russian bass, died at his Paris home yesterday aged 65.

Chaliapin, who at the peak of his career enjoyed a reputation and popularity such as few singers have experienced, was born at Kazan, on the River Volga, on February 15, 1873.

His early career was varied and adventurous, and he was by turn porter, shoemaker, hunter and streetsweeper.

He received his first musical training as a choirboy in Kazan, but his first serious studies as a singer were made under Oussatov at Tiflis.

He then sang at the Summer Theatre in St. Petersburg, and later at the Imperial Opera Houses there and at Moscow, where he scored his first outstanding suc-

cesses.
