BRITISH EMBASSY DENIES THAT NEGOTIATIONS ARE PROCEEDING WITH MR. TANI

Shanghai, To-day.

A statement on the conversations being conducted by the new British Ambassador, Sir Archibald Clerk-Kerr, with Japanese diplomats in Shanghai, was issued by the British Embassy last night.

The statement was issued in connection with reports circulated! by an American news

agency

quoting Japanese sources alleg- ing that Sir Archibald and Mr. Tani were nearing agreement on their respective interests in North and South China.

The statement said: "Sir Archibald and Mr. Tant have held numerous conversations recently, discussing local matters.

"No negotiations of any gen- eral character are either being conducted or are in prospect.” Reuter.
