British policy in the face of the Austrian coup was outlined by the Foreign Secretary, Lord Hali- fax, in the House of Lords yesterday. Replying to the debate on Central Europe, Lord Halifax said that firstly, we must seek to so conduct our foreign policy that it may deserve and command the support of the united people of the United Empire,

Secondly, while relaxing no exertion in pursuit of real peace, it must be our purpose to reassert the claims of international law as opposed to the exercise of force in the settlement of inter- national disputes.

SURPRISE ROYAL VISIT TO STEPNEY

London, To-day.

The King and Queen yesterday paid a surprise visit to new hous- ing estates in South London, where new flats have been erected in plac of slums.

NEW LUXURY LINERS FOR OLYMPIAD

Tokyo, To-day. Construction of three luxury liners designed expressly for transportation of visitors to the Olympic Games in 1940, is announced by the NY.K. The keel of the first of the three liners is being laid in May, and all three vessels will be completed before 1940.

It is pointed out in 1941 the total tonnage of the Italian fleet will amount to approximately 700,000 tons whereby the oldest vessels will not have been longer than twelve years in commission. With a displacement of 16,500 tons each, the ships will have speed of 22 knots. ---
