THE CHINA MAIL MARCH 14, 1938

JAPANESE NAVY Rejection Of British

REINFORCED IN SOUTH CHINA

Canton, To-day.

The Japanese navy's threat some

?

time ago to board all ships along the China coast and to relieve ships of war materials destined for the Chinese Government no matter what nation's flag the ships fly, is probably to be carried out very shortly.

3

Four cruisers, 12 destroyers and a submarine flotilla arrived in -South China waters yesterday from Formosa, increasing the Japanese naval strength considerably.

According to official reports the Japanese navy have now under their control over 20 islands in South China Waters. Our Own Correspondent.

President Miklas has resigned, and Dr. Arthur Zeiss-Inquart has taken over the functions of his ofice.

The official announcement of President Miklas resignation says that he laid down his functions at the request of Dr. Zeiss-Inquart, whereupon the presidential duties devolved upon the latter in ac- cordance with the Constitution of May, 1934-Reuter.

JAPANESE LOSSES IN THE AIR

Hankow, To-day. According to an official investi gation, since the commencement of Sino-Japanese hostilities, 849 Ja- panese airmen were killed wounded, excluding those drowned at sea-Hua Nan.

And French Protests

Berlin, To-day.

Describing the Italian attitude to the Austrian de- velopments as that of a nation with sympathe- tic understanding, the "Diplomatic and Politi- cal Correspondence," generally regarded as the voice of the German Foreign Office, denounces the British and French protests as "completely incomprehensible."

"SUCH PROTESTS WOULD HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATE AT THE TIME WHEN PRESIDENT WILSON'S FOURTEEN POINTS WERE CEREMONIOUSLY ACCEPTED AND FORMED INTO THE TREATY WHICH DIVIDED THE HELPLESS GERMAN PEOPLE AGAINST THEIR WILL, OR PLACED THEM UNDER THE DOMINATION OF OTHER POWERS.

"For anyone who has experienc- ed the joy of liberation which pre- vails to-day, can regard such pro tests only as documents of that spirit which divided the world into unequal parts and thus prevented harmony among nations.

"If the assertions in the foreign press that Austro-German tension has been a disturbing factor to peace, then from the logical view- point these same circles should to- day welcome the action through which this disturbing factor has been eliminated and peace in Europe has been furthered.""
