HON CAUSES BADMINTON UPSET

OLIVEIRA FAILS TO MAINTAIN HIS EARLY PROMISE

BAD JUDGMENT ON THE BASELINE

WIN DOUBLES

VERY entertaining badminton was provided last night at the Taikoo Club, when several matches in the Colony Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships were played off, M. A. Oliveira, last year's runner-up in the Singles, succumbing in three games to S. Y. Hon, to provide the only upset player, entered the second round of the evening.

Oliveira badly misjudged Hon's clearing shots, which were nearly always left alone, but which invariably fell within six inches or on the baseline, and in this manner Oliveira conceded valuable points at critical stages.

South China "A" have by no means distinguished themselves this season in the League, probably due to the fact that the majority of their players were on tour during the whole of 1936, firstly in the South Seas, prior to the Berlin Games, and then through Europe following the Olympiad, and the reaction must have set in at an in- opportune moment.

Eastern have displayed dogged tactics in their games to-date and the will to do or die has been the main feature of their displays. It would come as no surprise to see them enter the next round.
