The Champion Stakes, worth approximately $3,300 to the winning owner, is the eighth race on to-day's programme, and it is open to all the best contenders among the griffins, China ponies of any season, but I doubt whether more than five ponies will go out to face the starter over 14 miles.

If sent out, Mr. L. Dunbar's Liberty Bay is naturally the one to annex the main prize, but after its gallop last Saturday in the last race, there is some doubt whether it is really fit to run again as there is a possibility of a recurrence of its previous | trouble. However, in view of the fact that Liberty Bay has not been sent out in any race over the past two days, I think. the Dunbar Stable has merely kept it back for the Champions. The following are the probable starters:-

Liberty Bay (Mr. Maitland) Bear Claw (Mr. Black) King's Warden (Mr. Needa) Silkylight (Mr. Moller)

Desert Chief (Mr. Encarnacao). We need not look further than Liberty Bay as the Champion, but be yond watching its progress in the race punters have no further interest as this undefeated pony is debarred from betting. To pick the winner from the other four, as far as the betting is con- cerned, is no easy task. It will be a clash between two old ponies and two

new ones.

will be many who will be prepared to lay a bet on its chances against either King's Warden or Bear Claw. Silky- light has done remarkably well, and as the race for the Derby was run at à shorter distance will probably prove more suit- very fast pace, the slightly able for this powerful pony.

To keen observers of training, and people, who really understood the merits of China, ponies, the defeat of Desert Chief in the Derby was not altogether unexpected. There had, in fact, been some fear entertained by its stable connections that Desert Chief had not the requisite stamina to last out the Derby distance, and this was borne out when it failed badly over the last two hundred yards, when a last desperate effort was most im- portant. However, bearing in mind the fact that the Champions to-day will be contested over a shorter course, and as it won the over one mile yesterday in really fast Racing Stakes time without being extended, I con- sider that Desert Chief has more than co-defeat at the hands of Silkylight.

King's Warden won the Foochow Cup over 11⁄2 miles, the Challenge Cup over 1 miles and the Peking Plate lover 11⁄4 miles. In the first two events | it had only Wild Life as opposition, and it won without any great difficulty, but it had to do a bit of running in the other race, when, carrying 163 lbs., it again defeated Wild Life, with Soldier of Honour third.

In all its outings, King's Warden has been most impressive, and I shall not be far wrong in stating that,"

apart from Liberty Bay, it will require 器 really brilliant pony to lower its lours.

bear Bear

King's Warden will, I expect, the brunt of the betting, with Claw close on its heels.

Bear Claw has not done any really hard work. It won the China Stakes on Saturday over five furlongs, and on Monday it carried off the Victoria Stakes over one mile. It was not seen in action yesterday, thus lending co- lour to the belief that it will represent the Dunbar Stable, with Liberty Bay as a likely non-starter.

If started, Liberty Bày will win, otherwise I nominate King's Warden, with Bear Claw second and Silkylight third.

Whoever wins, I have no doubt that the race will be worth going a long Way to see, as the return, encounter between King's Warden and Bear Claw is keenly awaited. Under Mr. Needs, King's Warden goes through its paces with a nice easy movement, and Bear Claw will have to be at its best in After Silkylight's most convincing order to beat this great-hearted pony win in the Hong Kong Derby, there from the Dynasty stable,
