Attempt To Cross Yellow River Frustrated
Hankow, To-day.
Centre of hostilities in North China is now in Shan- si and Honan, where the Japanese appear to be pressing the attack energetically. Capture of Hsinhsiang is now admitted by the Chinese. The Japanese are advancing in three columns. One]
has already reached the small town of Hsiaoyi- cheng, 10 kilometres south-west of Hsinhsiang and about 40 kilometres from the Yellow River.
The second column gas moved west and has occupied the town of Hochia and then gone on to Siuwo, where it met with determined re- sistance.
A third column, about 2,000 strong, advanced west from Feng- chịu to try and effect a connection with the Japanese troops on the Peiping-Hankow Railway.
Guns can be heard in Kaifeng. Another Japanese detachment of about 300 men tried to cross the Yellow River near Chuning 90 kilometres northeast of Kaifeng but were unsuccessful.

NETHERLAND COMMENT ON EUROPEAN OUTLOOK
Amsterdam, To-day. Herr Hitler's Reich- stag speech is extensive- ly commented on in all the Netherlands news- papers.
The "Amsterdam Telegraaf" says that while the Fuehrer's speech did contain a few unpleasant remarks, on the whole it was far more mo- derate in tone than had been ex- pected.
The speech had special signific- ance for the Netherlands as the Fuehrer refuted the rumour that Germany and Japan planned to
divide between them the East In- dies.
