CANTON AREA

UNDER HEAVY

AIR ATTACKS

Canton, To-day.

What promises to be a day of thrills commenced at 6.20 a.m. to-day when in semi- darkness, four big Japanese bombers visited the city drop- ping several bombs in the vicin ity of White Cloud Mountain and Shekpai, a few miles east of Canton. The loud detona- tions of the bombs roused the populace from their slumbers and shook houses all over the city.

Anti-aircraft, pom pom and machine-guns went into action.

M

Two planes later bombed Bocca Tigris, and two others dropped bombs in the country- side at Cheungmuktao, but no news at present is available re- garding the Canton-Kowloon Railway.

Nearly three hours later, atz 9.10a.m., eleven more planes crossed the city, four of which were sighted at Saichuen heading northward possibly for the Canton-Hankow line. A. A. guns again went into ac- tion.

At 9.20, heavy bombs were dropped somewhere- north of

the

e city, again shaking build- ings, but it is too early for de- tails. It is generally felt that the Japanese airmen intend to take advantage of to-day's sunshine and clear blue sky, after last week's more or less cloudy weather.-Reuter.

RAIDS CONTINUE

Canton, To-day. For the greater part of the morning Gänton listened to the thud of heavy bombs most of which were apparently directed on the airfield near the White Cloud Mountain north of the city. Other bombs were drop- ped further east.

According to Chinese circles, 38 Japanese planes participated in the third raid during the last five hours, but the machines. were flying very high and only small groups were sighted from time to time.

Despite the intermittent din. bombing and gunfire, Shameen and the greater part of the city, are carrying
