GOLD STERILISAT
Sir John Simon's Reply To Commons Questions
Washington, To-day. The United States Treasury announcement of its decision to limit its gold sterilisation operations to sums over $100,000,000 acquired in each quarter, is regarded as a mildly inflationary action on Wall Street, with the likelihood of it having little effect on the credit situation. However, it is believed it may hold open the door to still further changes in monetary policy. The action is interpreted as a compromise between the reported desire of Mr. Eccles, of the Trea- sury Department, to de-sterilise the entire in- active gold fund, and the strong sentiment of Mr. Henry Morgenthau, the Secretary of Trea- sury, and others for retaining it. Meanwhile, says a message from London, the U.S. Treasury's decision was the subject of a question by Mr. C. R. Attlee, leader of the Labour opposition, to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, in the House of Commons yesterday.

Sir John Simon. cordially agreed with this view.
The measure was in line with the general policy of easy credits which he regarded in this country.
