London, December 28. THE National Sporting Club have completed ar- rangements for a fight between Jock McAvoy, British middle and light-heavyweight champion, and Frank Hough of Battersea at Earl's Court on January 20, and have made formal application to the British Boxing Board of Control to stage it for the British light-heavyweight championship.

It is practically certain that the Board will decline to sanction it as a championship fight and will give instructions that if it takes place the fight must not be under championship conditions.

Hough achieved much popularity by knocking out Tommy Mar- tin of Deptford and putting up a plucky display recently against Heinz Lazek of Austria, both these fights having taken place under N.S.C. promotion.

G. Turner, chairman of Sheffield Wednesday, announced last night that the board have offered James McMullan, manager of Notts County, the position of manager on terms which he has accepted, subject to the consent of the Notts County board to release him.

After leaving Manchester City in 1933 McMullan retired as a player and was appointed manager of Oldham Athletic, with whom he : stayed one season. He was then appointed manager of Aston Villa

at the beginning of 1994-5.

He resigned in October, 1985, and in November, 1936, succeeded Mr. Bertie Smith as manager of Notts County. He played for Scotland on 16 occasions.
