Laid-Up Ships In Harbour To Be Used As Godowns
(SPECIAL TO THE “CHINA MAIL”)
A new use has been found for certain Chinese merchant vessels, lying idle in the harbour owing to hostilities between China and Japan. been converted into godowns. -
They have
SOON, IF THE PRESENT CRISIS CONTINUES, OTHERS OF THE SHIPS WILL BE TURNED INTO “FLOATING HOTELS," ACCORDING TO A SCHEME WHICH IS NOW UNDER CONSI DERATION BY CHINESE SHIPPING COMPANIES.
As a result of the blockade of the China coast by the Japanese Navy, many merchant vèssels flying the Chinese flag have been forced to take refuge in Hong Kong harbour.
Several of these ships have since changed ownership, having been sold to foreign concerns. But there are still over 30 Chinese ships tied up idle in the harbour.
FIVE SHIPS
With expense accounts accumu- lating day after day, the China Merchants' Steam Navigation Com- pany recently decided to convertį their five vessels into godowns and other companies are following the example.
