STRANGE STORY OF SAGHALIEN DISAPPEARANCE OF TWO JAPANESE

Tokyo, To-day.

Lifting the shroud of mystery veiling the disap- pearance of the screen actor-producer, Yoshida Okada, and the famed dramatic producer, Yoshi- masa Yoshida, in the snowbound border area in Saghalien, Mr. Bunishiro Tanaka, Japanese Con- sul-General at Alexandrovsk, has reported to the Japanese Foreign Office that the couple are in Soviet custody:

The official said he was in- formed by the Soviet Commis- sioner for Foreign Affairs that the couple are now "under the protection of Soviet border guards, and will undergo a for- mal examination.

The Foreign Office immediately instructed Mr. Tanaka to seek im- mediate release of the pair and to take them into custody when they are freed.

Official reports said actors arrived in South Saghalien on December 30, and the following day left for Shikika, a town close to the Soviet-Japanese border.

On January 2, two travellers ar- rived at another border town and asked permission to view the boun- dary, asssertedly for the purpose of reproducing frontier conditions in a prospective film.

Accompanied by two guards, the couple proceeded to the border line. The couple, according to Japanese reports, dashed across the line into Soviet territory and disappeared from the sight of the two dazed policemen
