MAKES NEW RECORD BID

Cadiz, To-day.

In an attempt to break the dis- tance record for a flight in a straight-line, the Italian airman, Stoppani, left at 1250 GMT: head- ing for Buenos Aires.

Stoppani left Sardinia on De- cember 16 on the first of a series of lights at the order of Signor Mussolini in view of the institu- tion of an air service between. Italy and Latin America, but he made a forced landing off the AI- gerian coast owing to had wea ther-Reuter.

LE TEMPS TAKES THE CYNICAL VIEW

All stocks fell startlingly.

Traders panicked and rushed to sell and at the close most of the market's recovery since the mid- October slump had been wiped out. much as Leading issues fell as five points, many of them touching new low levels for the year, or longer.

The primary cause appears to have been the anti-monopolist speech of the Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Joseph Jackson, which started fears that the Gov- ernment is starting a trust-bursting attack.

It was

recorded further that. steel production in the United States is now at its lowest since September, 1934, at 19 per cent of the nation's capacity, while

the poorness of the motor industry was disclosed by the General Motors' statement-Reuter.

INDIAN P.C. FOUND BADLY

Paris, To-day. INJURED

Political circles in the French capital have welcomed the develop- ments which, following the recent exchange of notes, have led to the easing of tension between the United States and Japan.

"Le Temps" believes that the American-propensity to accept the Japanese apology and assur ances and consider the Panay in- cident settled, is primarily due to the fact that Washington has subjected the whole situation to careful examination.

The importance of certain trade- figures has been fully realised.

That, for instance, the value of the American export trade to Japan amounts to $200,000,000 against the import of Japanese goods to the value of $150,000,000.

On the other hand the value of United States' exports to China is only $63,000.000 whilst its imports of Chinese goods are vained at $47,000,000. These economic con- siderations, says the French news- paper, are helping the American public appear long-suffering, al- though there are limits to Amer- ican patience, it adds. Ocean
