Navy To Take Over R.A.F. Station

This would be one of the first re sults of the Government's decision, announced in July, to end the sys- tem of dual control of the Fleet Air Arm and grant the Admiralty full administrative powers over all ship-borne aircraft, whether they are actually afloat or ashore.

Previously all naval aircraft landed from ships, together with their natal personnel, came auto- matically under the jurisdiction of the Air Ministry, and many anoma- lies resulted.

PROVIDING ALL PERSONNEL

Another result of the aduministra~ tive change will be the eventual replacement of all R.A.F. pilots in the Fleet Air Arm by naval officers. Hitherto the Navy has provided only 60 per cent. of the pilots, though all the observers were naval officers.

If the Lee-on-Solent station is taken over by the Admiralty, it will be the first air station to be owned by the Navy for 20 years.

COLLEGE WITH OWN AERODROME

The well-known technical college at Loughborough, Leicestershire, which has an aeronautical engineer- ing division, is to have an aero- drome, with hangars and the most modern equipment. It will be a municipal airport.

This decision follows the comple-" tion of negotiations between the college, the Loughborough Corpora- tion and the Air Ministry. Only a few details remain to be settled and preparations for the construction of the aerodrome will begin by the end of the year.

Much of the work will be done by students of the college. They have already made their own sta- dium, their own swimming pool and some of the college furniture. This is an important element in their education

Loughborough will be the first college to have its own air port. It already possesses aeroplanes în the class rooms, and also in the

The aeronautical engineering di- vision has the advantage of being part of the best equipped technical training centre in Britain. It pro- fits from the motor works, the wood- working section, the metallurgical, chemical, electrical and other sec- tions.

At the head of the division is Flt- Lt. H. E. Falkner. The diploma course is for four years, and an extra year is needed to take honours. Of 500 residential stu- dents about 45 are studying aero- nautical engineering: The curricu- lum will soon include training in practical flying.
