the is not up to internationalist standard. He is not as good as al-Kerr, whom I have seen four no times this autumn.

Myreside enthusiasts will low their thoughts to go further than Roberts. This is RESERVE. TO A RESERVE.

I have made no secret of the fact natural, perhaps; but, I think, they are in for a disappointment. that I have never regarded Kerr as being of international st status, either. I have seen their captain play He got his first cap as reserve to three times this season. After Marshall, who, in his turn, was reserve to D. L. Brown. So he was a reserve to a reserve, and, last season, was onst- ed by that reserve. Kerr is indeed a splendid full back, but he just escapes real class. And Roberts is a rung or two below him on the ladder.

| J. A. Innes gave a good performance for the North against the Midlands, and he goes on for trial with the South. He may reach one of the final trials. Splendid. But we must see more of him in big company before making any concrete remarks about him. His club hardly get the tests that the city, Bor- der, and Dunfermline and St. Andrews University clubs dogma

-

My attention has been drawn several times to J. L. Stuart Watson this sea- son The London Scottish certainly seem to have a "find" in him He has the advantage of having played for Oxford, which always gives a player a real, searching time. In the game against Cambridge, he showed himself to be a very safe last line of defence, so it is rather surprising that so many people should be hailing him this sea- son as an almost newcomer to` - Ozé- standing circles. I am quite prepared to see him at both Melrose and Mazr- rayfield.

A. H. Piper has not fived up to his reputation at Glenalmond, where Mark Sugden, his coach, the famous Irish scrum half, regarded him as a certain Scottish "cap" of the future. Fiper, I think, can hardly be regarded now as a real challenger for honours, although there is no reason why he should not reproduce his old form at some time, Such things do happen-

VE MUCH OF A MUCHNESS

There is much of a muchness about Mackinnon, Smith, Dun, and Thomson. You might call them anfety-first backs, with not too much call upon our ins gination. Mackinnon, I think, is street or so above the others.

H. S. Gillies has been calling forth much praise down South. He played full back for the Scottish schoolboys tagainst the English schoolboys in 1938-34 At Laretto, he was regarded as reliable in his position. I cannot | make personal comments upon him, 11 do not remember seeing him left the Musselburgh educatio lishment - But the praise tha through from England ought to ed

COOLNESS AND A “CAP" Before dealing with the last man on the list, C F.. Griese, it might be as well to think over a Fazzyfield remark about G. S. P. Bain, the Melville Col- lege FP full back, who has had much to do with the sudden and happysue- cess that has come to his
