The view held in Hankow is that the peace talk emanates from

Tokyo with an object behind it, and that the object is connected

with the struggle behind the scenes between moderate and extremist circles in Japan.

Outstanding feature of the de- fence of the capital is the calm of the military. Within the city, there is an iron control and general demeanour of troops in- dicative of high morale.

Even if the Japanese reach and breach the walls, their task will be far from complete, as the whole of the city is virtually a honeycombed defence system. Our Own Correspondent.

GEN. NAKAJIMA WOUNDED

Shanghai, 1.45 p.m. To-day General K. Nakajima has been wounded in action during the battle for Nanking, according to an official announcement by the Japanese mili- tary here this morning.
