[OCKEY UMPIRING, WHETHER AT MEN'S OR WOMEN'S GAMES, IS A TICKLISH AND THANKLESS JOB AT ANY TIME AND IN VIEW OF THE MANY COMPLAINTS RECEIVED DURING LAST SEASON AND AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS SEASON AT THE LACK OF SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE BY SOME OF THE OFFICIALS CONTROLLING WOMEN'S HOCKEY IN THE COLONY, I HAVE BEEN ABLE, THROUGH THE GOOD OFFICES OF A QUALIFIED OFFICIAL, TO PRESENT BELOW SOME NOTES ON THE DIFFERENCES ON RULES OF THE

BOARD

Rule 1-Teams

Similar in all essentials to Rule 1 of Men's Hockey, but a definite statement is made that the usual formation of a team, that is, five forwards, three half-backs, two backs and a goal keeper, is not com- pulsory.

Rule 2-Captains.

This rule is similar in all respects to Rule 2 of Men's Hockey. Rule 3-Ground.

The ground is the same as playedį on by men, but the length may be shortened to 90 yards and should not be longer than 100 yards. A note is added to this rule as where a ground is marked with a 7 yards line; this line must be used and not an imaginary 5 yards line, which is the correct line for Ladies' Hockey. Locally, where men's grounds are always used, the 7 yards line is the one recognised.

Rule 4-Goal Posts, etc..

This rule is substantially the same as Rule 4 of the Men's Hoc- key, but the goal boards are not, compulsory.

Rule 5.-Striking Circle.

This rule is similar in all respects to Rule 5 of Men's Hockey. Rule 6

This is similar to Rule 6 of Men's! Hockey, Clause E, of the latter, which reads: "A ball of any other! description may be used as agreed upon mutually by the respectivel captains" is not included, and note is added to the rule, which states that "Umpires shall forbi the use of any other ball”.

Rule 7 Sticks.*

Similar to Rule 7 of Men's Hoc- key, but no proviso has yet been made for the insetting of fittings of hardwood. The weight of the

stick must not exceed 23 ounces, asį against the 28 ounces allowed for mer An India-rubber ring, which is 4′′ in external diameter when on the stick, may be used.
