PROPOSALS AFOOT FOR CHANGES IN SOFTBALL RULES

Suggestions For Better And Faster Game

MEETING CALLED FOR TO-MORROW

(By "SHORTSTOP”)

NOW that the first half of the softball League is almost over, critical comments on the game will not be amiss: Opinions by those who have re- cently arrived from America are that the local method of play is not the softball that is played in the States.

When the League was formed in Hong Kong, the majority of the Committee voted that the League should comply with Spalding's Official Rules and Regulations, with four exceptions: 35 instead of 45 feet between bases; 9 instead of 7 innings; 9 instead of 10 play- ers, and a 14 inch ball instead of the 12 inch. All this, of course, is the old indoor baseball, which is seldom played nowadays.

܂

That a greater distance between bases would mean a faster game can easily be seen, because the base runner must run an extra ten feet, and he is that much more likely to be put out before he reaches the next base.

The 12 inch ball is easier to handle and will travel much fur- ther when hit, while the pitcher could have more "English" on the ball if he were given that ex- tra distance to toss to the bat- ter.

It is easy to understand that a pitcher can't throw with any curves on the ball when he is only 30 feet

away from the batter. A faster KOWLOON G.C.

REGULATION CHANGES

A change in these regulations could be effected at this stage of the League fixtures without unduly affecting the standing of the teams, as they will each have the same opportunity in the revised rules, if they are accepted.
