Shanghai, To-day.

While a column of Japanese troops swept around the British and French perimeters of Shanghai, another Japanese force advanced to meet Japanese units proceeding north from Minghong, and a junction is expected to-day.

The Japanese now claim complete occupation of Sungkiang, from which their northward advance is stated to be continuing.

They also claim to have reached the outskirts of Nanhsiang, which they are confident of captur- ing shortly.

Part of the Chinese forces who withdrew from the western front are now pivoted on Tsipao, ten miles south-south-east of Nanhsiang, whence the Chinese line runs to Liuho.

The Japanese announce that in view of the danger of land mines and unexploded hand grenades, the area west of the Shanghai-Hangchow Railway,

will be closed to the public but will be opened as early as possi- ble:

Interest now centres on the posi- tion at Nantao.

A small Japanese force has al ready reached the west bank of Zagwei Creek, but it remains to be seen whether the Chinese forces to the east of the Creek will really stage another doomed battalion drama. -

INDICATIONS OMINOUS Present indications are ominous, as the Chinese forces, besides dig- ging trenches and making other warlike preparations, have warned remaining non-combatants to eva- cuate the area.
