SWEDEN SECURE GREAT ATHLETIC VICTORY IN BERLIN

AN EXCITING STRUGGLE

TO THE END

RESULT TOTALLY UNEXPECTED

(By H. M. Abrahams)

London, September 24.

SWEDEN gained a great victory over Germany in an athletic contest in the Berlin Stadium, the scene of the 1936 Olympic Games, during the week- end, and has yet to lose to the Germans at home or away. The victory was, however, totally unexpect- ed, for the almost unanimous opinion of the Swed- ish experts when the British team was in Stockholm the previous week was that Germany would win by a margin of at least three or four points.

The match consisted of twelve track and eight field events. Each team won the same number of events (ten), and the wins in the field and on the track also were equally divided. In points Ger- many scored 61 to 59 on the track; Sweden had an advantage of 8 points in the field (48 points to 40).

Sweden did not do as well as was expected in the 400 metres, in which the Germans finished first and second and the Swedish re- cord-holder Wachenfeldt was clearly below form; nor in the 1,500 metres, in which the Swedish crack Jonsson was beaten for second place by Schaumburg, while the Swedish second string Jansson ran two seconds above form, covering the distance in the equivalent of 4min 116sec. for the mile, and beat Schaumburg by five yards.

Sweden, however, excelled

in

the steeplechase, in which Dom- pert (Germany), third in the Olympic Games, was beaten; the high jump, in which the Germans were right off form, and the hop, step, and jump.
