ANOTHER BID FOR PEACE ON NON-INTERVENTION French Ready To Drop Token Withdrawal Idea

HOPE OF AGREEMENT

BUT CONFLICT REMAINS

Paris, To-day.

It is learned in French circles that if it is im- possible to reach agreement at the non-interven- tion meeting

ron "token withdrawal" of foreign volunteers in Spain, the French Government will not insist on it.

Paris is unwilling to believe that the obstacles

in non-intervention are insuperable, but the opin-

ion is held that it will be difficult for the British and

French Governments to accept the Italian request

that decisions of the committee during discussions be taken to be unanimously held.

This rule might easily paralyse

the working of the committee, but DEATH OF

DEATH OF FAMOUS

it is thought it will be possible to get the Soviet representative to abstain from voting, so that an effective solution can be reached.

USELESS STEP

Finally, strong objections are raised to Italy's refusal to bind herself to accept the international commission's figures of volunteers. It is felt that if the Italian claim in this connexion is conceded, it will be more or less useless to send commissions to Spain Reuter.

NO TOKEN WITHDRAWAL?

Paris, Today France will not insist on the token withdrawal of volunteers should--no agreement be reached in the non- intervention committee on their exact number, says a semi-official statement.

"Le Petit Parisien" says that well-informed circles believe that the attitude of the Powers in the committee is not unalterable, and do not think that the difficulties preventing final agreement are un- surmountable.

SICK AND WOUNDED

Count Grandi's expression of goodwill, says the paper, went be yond what Britain and France had expected

"Echo de Paris” says that token withdrawal would be of no practical value, since obviously both sides would take the e opportunity to get rid of their sick and wounded. Trans Ocean
