RECORDED

The Caspian Sea is gradually disappearing. The level of the water this year is expected to be the lowest ever recorded.

The sea has been systematically dropping readings taken over a century shew. The 300 large and small rivers which flow into the sea cannot compensate for the loss of water caused by evaporation.

During the spring flood water this year the level of the sea rose by" 20 inches but the drop during the driest period of the year is expected to reach 18 inches.

Compared with the level of the water 100 years ago, the average level this summer is expected to be lower by some 36 inches and the average level this winter is expect ed to be lower by some 46 inches.

fit under an extension of the system of State social maintenance for the Soviet Union which has now been approved by the Gov- ernment.

Non-manual workers and their families will in future receive old age pensions, sickness benefits, dis- acility pensions and pensions in cases of death of the bread-winners on an equal basis with manual workers.

This means that old age pensions will be granted to all male workers, both manual and non-manual who reach the age of 60 and have a 25

Old age pensions are paid inde- pendently of the fact whether worker ceases or continues to work. The rate of pension is fixed at from 50 to 60 per cent. of the wages, dependent on the branch of îndus- try in which the worker is employ- ed.
