AMA VAIN ONSLAUGHTS Japanese Fail To Break Chinese Main Line Resistance

MORE AND MORE TROOPS BEING LANDED

Shanghai, To-day. Incessant rainfall is compelling both the Chin- ese and Japanese air forces to remain inactive.

The Japanese artillery, however, is subjecting the Chinese positions on the Lotien-Liuhang sec- tor to intensive bombardment, while Japanese warships in the Whangpoo are joining in: -

The Japanese are still trying desperately to break Chinese resistance in this sector, with, appar- ently, little hope of success.

Several times has their barrage been lifted, after which their troops advance to the assault, only to be hurled back by withering machine-gun and rifle fire.

BASILISK SINKS SUBMARINE
