New York, To-day. Brilliant pitching by "Lefty" Gomez gave the New York Yankees a smashing victory over the New York Giants by 8 runs to 1 in their first clash during the 1937 World Series, which was held here yester- day in the Yankee Stadium in dull, but sultry weather before a dis- appointing attendance of $0,573, which yielded a gate of U.S.G$234,- 256.

The Yankees, through Gomez, held the Giants to no score until the fifth inning when Ripple scored as Tony Mancusco hit into a double- play, but in the next inning the Yankees scored seven runs, the sprel being helped by three walks and

two errors.
