An interesting experiment has just been carried out at the Empire Pool, Wembley, when a deep sea diver engaged on adjustments to the wave making machinery invited swimmers to an underwater tea party. table and chairs were anchored and the crockery once filled with water remained in position. Of course, partaking refreshment was impossible. but it made an interesting diving feat A number of invitations were accepted but only two, a girl and a man, could remain in position and finally the man only remained with the diver.. Advance To Within Five Miles Of Paotingfu

Peiping, To-day.

At dawn yesterday the Japanese advance in two sectors on the North China front had reached with- in five miles of Paotingfu and Tsangchow, respec- tively, and it is now doubtful whether the Chinese intend to defend these places or fall back on a stronger line between the railways from Chenting to Sangyuan, some 50 miles further south.

Japanese troops in the Peiping-Hankow Rail- way zone have now deployed on the north bank of the Tsao River, while those in the Tientsin- Pukow Railway zone claim to have occupied Ho- chuang and Malopo, two small towns north of Tsangchow.

Meanwhile the Kwantung Army has extended operations from Shansi to Suiyuan, which it has invaded at two points.

ADMIRALTY

While one Japanese column was pushing northward along the Pei- ping-Suiyuan Railway, another column seized Shaihoku Pass, fur-
