An epic story of three days' defence of the wall- ed town of Ku An by a single Chinese regiment was unfolded to a Reuter correspondent when he visit- ed the battlefield behind the Japanese lines.

Although the tide of battle swept onwards as the Chinese troops fell back from the banks of the Hun River, the regiment refused to quit their post until the defences were reduced to ruins by a very intensive Japanese bombardment.

Reuter's correspondent saw the arms and legs of more than 20 Chinese soldiers sticking out of the wreckage of a bombed gate tower.
