EARL'S "presents" very popu lar in Southshire. Cards in plates mount. At meeting of exclusive Royal Yacht Club at Cowes EARL OF BYWATER, is elected unani- mously. His friend "MR. BENI- TO MANCINI elected Non-Sail- ing Member.

QUICK FADE OUT.

FADE IN...

BABE, in shirt sleeves, felling trees. MIKE, gun still protrud- ing from hip pocket, sweating as- sistance.

MANCINI, entering "Say, BA- BE, you oughta give a ball. Every one in Southshire is saying: “Why don't the Earl give a ball?'

BABE: "If you and RED send out invites. I'm too busy."

Dissolve to-

In castle RED, after much thought, composes: "EARL BY- WATER says to come

up and make Whoopee at the Castle next July 4"

"That looks pretty good to me," adds MANGINT.

Lap dissolve to

BABE and his cousin," "MISS PATTERSON" (RED PAT), re- ceive thronging society guests.

Hot American music in old chandelier illuminated Castle. Southshire Society attempt to imitate MIKE, and RED PATS Cariocar

MANCINI quietly books orders for "eau de Cologne" and "whi ky."

COLONEL WILSON, hovering near, takes samples from each.

BABE is in love with JOANNE Waltzes her out of Ball Room in- to moonlit garden. They walk to river where yacht EARL BABE. rides head to ebbing tide. To- gether they could harness that tide and get power to develop a new Bywater Estate. (Joanne will Zone day own opposite property.)

It is a proposal of marriage. He kisses her. JOANNE yields. Then breaks away. Cannot yet give herself. Says, "Nothing in common between us.” Actually BABE not yet mastered her proud sporting nature. JOANNE leaves him.

Music of waltz. As he gazes sadly, EARL BABE, built to beat JOANNE, slowly swings to meet incoming tide. Bow now points out to sea, to moonlit sea stretching away towards Ameri-

ca.

SLOW FADE OUT. FADE IN

Bywater

Tenants Day. Fendal offerings of mammoth pumpkins, chickens, etc on table.

PRITCHARD, representing old tenants. hopes BABE is going to make BYWATER his home.

BABE, embarrassed, thanks him. But he must return to his own country. America, where there are no "EARLS," just plain "MISTERS" Points to nortrait of grandfather on wall: "What have I in common with that man?”

In different clothes, Ninth Earl Bywater is image of BARE Same eyes, nose. outh-hair. BABE'S argument is shaken.

Twice changes-position to avoid eyes of portrait which, in dose up, follow him round room.

Finally looks out of open wID- dow towards sea: "America is land of young. Without young, BYWATER can never be rebuilt."

BABE turns round. Finds youth of village, who at first hostile, have filled the hall.

FRANK: "That's why we are here. Don't matter to us whe ther you are Earl or Ploughboy, English or American. You're our boss, and we're going to work for you, ain't we, boys?"

Shouts of approval They sing: "For he's a jolly good fellow." BABE protests he is not. He is ад ex-gangster.

Protest drowned. Carried shoulder high out of hall

Suddenly car pulls up with squealing brakes.

MANCINI: "Quick! Cops after

us!"

Talking Technically

FADE IN, FADE OUT: The gradual appearance or disappear ance of the picture, with the screen growing darker or lighter.

DISSOLVE: The fade out of a scene with the superimposition of another scene, which gradually takes the place of the original.

CUT: The scene stops abrupt-

Leaving gaping villagers, gang- sters escape to river. BABE can- not

understand, but MANCINI says, "Must make get-away in EARL BABE, now moored Cowes. Roads for King's Cup Race to- morrow.”

Gang crosses to Cowes by night in motor-boat. But find EARL BABE moored inside a dozen other yachts. Only hope to wait till race starts and bunk in mid- dle. Wild idea, but Cops might not suspect.

Early next morning. Roads.

Conces

Yachts airing mainsails in sun- light. At next mooring JOANNE comes on deck of JOANNE' in white skirt, blue reefer, yachting

cap.

Hoists signal: "Ahoy, EARL BABE! When are you going back America?”:

BABE hoists: "After race- when I've beaten you!"

MANCINI: "No funny staff, BABE. I'm boss now. Sail your boat to stay last of Fleet. At turning point, of course let her rip for France, see?”

Five Minute and Minute guns go: Race starts.

BABE "jockeys to cross start- ing line last. "Starves” - and “pinches” EARL BABE in order to fall behind JOANNE.

JOANNE flies taunting signals. Babe.can't stand it. Goes after her. Closes, passes JOANNE

MANCINI coming on deck. whips out gun; “Double crosser! Attempt to round that buoy and I'll blow your brains out?”

Leading yachts approach_sea- ward buoy, come into wind, round buoy, fill on other tack

* EARL BABE approaches buoy. BABE, covered by MANCINI, pre- tends to "misz stays”, and heads seawards..

JOANNE må

oeuvre Taunts BABE by waiting for him.

RED PAT'S great moment, Loves BABE, though she will lose him

Despises MANCINË: “Lily livered Italian! No guts but a gun !""

Takes gun and throws it over- board: "Come on! We're going after the JOANNE!"-

Pursuit begins.

Suddenly a drone in the sky. Seaplane. Beside pilot is COL WILSON, benign as ever. Deck of EARL BABE shot from sea- plane.

On deck RED takes charge. By rules BABE alone may steer. But Skipper must line up herself,

BABE "Don't care. I've beaten her. Thanks, RED."

COL. WILSON apologises for coming on board uninvited. Shows badges. Deputy Head of Scotland- yard.

BABE prepares to follow MAN- CINT and RED in arrest...

COL. WILSON: "Sorry, but.. Ive got no warrant for LORD BYWATER!”

BABE on deck, bewildered.

Crew of JOANNE, lined up, raise white racing hats. JOANNE leads famous racing greeting to victorious yacht: "Ahoy, EARL BABE! Hip, hip, hooray!!”

BABE returns greeting: “Ahoy, JOANNE Hip, hip, hooray P” -

BABE, MANCINI, as if captives Racing flags and sails

and signal seaplane: "Okay. Have situation in-control.”

Rival crews work at furling. JOANNE and BABE so busy that

Meanwhile EARL BABE, with no hand on wheels, falls course, heads for JOANNE, ap- proaching : on opposite tack. Yachts just miss each other. As JOANNE passes, BABE pretends to be at wheel As seaplane swoops, pretends to be "held up." COL. WILSON apparently satis- fied. Seaplanë makes off.

Now a straight race to the finish

JOANNE and EARL BABE gain better wind, overhaul other yachts. Neck to neck. EARL BABE

crosses finishing line split second before JOANNE.

Yachts at moorings Seaplane lands. Police launch approaches:

last everything ship-shape. Both make ready their dinghies. JOAN-. NE is first into dinghy. Rows over to EARL BABE, BABE helps her on deck.

JOANNE: "Not such a bad ship after all"

BABE: "Wait till you see my cabin. I fitted it out myself.”

They kiss.

BANG!!!

They spring apart.

Smoke blows away from gun on Royal Yacht Club Terrace. Last race of day is over. Yacht Club

standard flutters down.

FADE OUT.
