Violent Offensives And Counter-Offensives JAPANESE SHIP BOMBED

Shanghai, 2 p.m., Today.

Sharp Chinese counter-attacks have resulted in the recapture of most of the ground in the vici- nity of the Kiangwan Racecourse, conceded under pressure of the sudden onslaught of heavy tanks on Wednesday. At least seven tanks were disabled during reckless feats of heroism.

The Japanese official report on the air attacks state that a Japanese merchant ship was hit and that one person on board was killed and several wounded. The Chinese claim that the ship was a transport and that heavy casualties were probable in the packed craft. Our Own Correspondent.

ENTIRE FRONT ABLAZE

Shanghai, To-day.

The entire Shanghai front, from Kiangwan to Woosung and Paoshan, is wreathed in the smoke of battle as the Japanese at some points and Chinese at others, early this morning, launched determined drives in an effort to penetrate the opposing lines.

The Chinese defence, however, is meeting the latest menace with the same determination and suc- cess as on former occasions.

Large numbers of planes on both sides are engaged in the battle, and dog fights are taking place on all sectors of the front.
