Considerable confusion seems to exist as to the situation in regard to Americans living in China.

It is learned in Shanghai that American sub- jects have not received any warning to leave the country, and many believe that President Roosevelt had been misquoted when he was reported to have said that Americans would remain in China at their own risk and would not be afforded protection by Washington.

Confirmation of the statement at- tributed to the President is being anxiously awaited.

Some Americans, interviewed by Reuter, said they would pre- fer to give up their American nationality than to liquidate their interests in China.
