Heralds Japanese Preparations For Attack

Tientsin, To-day.

That a major Japanese offensive south-west of the Tientsin-Peiping Railway is pending in conjunc tion with operations in Shantung is indicated by extensive preparations at Japanese headquarters in Tientsin.

Japanese battalions are arriving uninter- ruptedly and the streets of Tientsin are blocked by men and transport.

Even the foreign areas are passed by the marching columns.

Japanese military headquarters state that the first objective of the offensive will be an attack on the Chinese concentrated between the Peiping- Hankow and Tientsin-Pukow Railways.

The Chinese forces, who have been attacking with consistent success in this region, owing to their superiority in numbers, say the Japanese, “are endangering the Tientsin-Peiping Railway." Trans- Ocean.
