250 ATHLETES EXPECTED

Sydney, July 8. With athletes from all parts of the British Empire assembled in Sydney, the British Empire Games of 1938, which are to be held in conjunction with Australia's 150th Anniversary Celebrations, should be one of the greatest sporting gatherings ever seen in Australia. The Games commence with a grant opening ceremony on February 5, 1938, and will continue for one week, concluding on February 12

Advice received so far indicates that England, South Africa Canada, India, Scotland, Wales, Ceylon, New Zealand, Trinidad, Bri- tish Guiana, Rhodesia, Jamaica, and Australia, will definitely be re- presented at the Games, while re- plies are also expected at an early date from Newfoundland and Ber- muda.
Each contestant at the Games must be a British subject and either born in one of the constituent parts. of the Empire or resident therein for six months immediately prior to December, 1937.
THE EVENTS
The sporting events which will comprise next year's Games will be track and field athletics, cycling, : boxing, rowing, and sculling, swim- - ming and diving, wrestling (free style), and lawn bowls.
The awards for the Games will consist of a silver-gilt medallion for first place in the individual events with a silver medallion and bronze medallion for the minor placings.

MEDALLIONS.
In the team events a silver-gilt, medallion will be given to each member of the winning team with silver medallions, and bronze medal- lions for each member of the teams [being awarded second and third prizes respectively. A commemora- tive medallion will be awarded to each competitor and official.
The numbers expected to come from the various countries are: New Zealand 70, Canada 60, Eng- land 40, South Africa 33, Ceylon 9, Scotland 8, Wales 6, Rhodesia 5, Southern Rhodesia 3, British Guiana 1, Trinidad 1.
That means a total of 236 are ex- pected at the moment. Meanwhile in Australia now, athletes of all the sports are carefully drawing up training schedules that will bring them to their peak by the time of the selection of the Australian teams. With the Empire Games in the background, it seems certain that all the Empire Games sports will be in for a boom this coming.
