BEAT HIS BROTHER, COUNT JOHN BENDERN, BY ONE HOLE IN THE 36-HILE FINAL. THE WOMEN'S EVENT AT HILVER SUM WAS WON BY MISS SHEILA STROYAN, THE 17-YEAR- OLD SUNNINGDALE PLAYER, WHO BEAT MRS. I. SALBERG- FYEN OF HILVERSUM BY 5 AND 3 IN THE FINALS
It was a close game between the Bendern brothers, but Count John, the former British amateur champion, was erratic, and the steadier play of his brother told in the end.
Count John, who was three, down at the end of the first round, several times drove into the rough. He was three down at the turn; but after halving the next four holes, won two in a row. Alaric then won the 16th and 17th to become three up again, and he kept his lead when the 18th was halved.
ALARIC'S VICTORY
In the afternoon round John play- ed much better, and won back three holes in the outward half, to-square at the turn. They were still level at the 14th, and John became one up at the 15th, holing a 15-yard putt for a "birdie". 4. He failed on the next two greens, however, and his brother became dormy one. A half at the last hole gave Alaric victory.
In the women's final Miss Stroyan was five up at the end of the morn- ing round, thanks to splendid driv- ing and approach play. In the after- noon Miss Stroyan's lead was never less than four up, and with a per- fect 3 at the 15th she ended match.
