ADMIRALTY'S STATEMENT ON GERMAN SUBMARINE AFFAIR Sensational Incident Reported Off Portland Bill

BROUGHT TO SURFACE BY

BRITISH DESTROYER DROPPING DEPTH CHARGE

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA · MAIL”)

London, To-day..

A sensational story of the dropping of a depth charge by a British destroyer in the vicinity of a German submarine off Portland Bill yesterday ow- ing to the latter's close watching of British naval manoeuvres off the Dorset coast, had its sequel in the House of Commons yesterday evening.

The news of the incident, which has caused a tremendous stir throughout England, appeared in most of yesterday morning's newspapers.

The newspapers stated that the destroyer H.M.S.Wolfhound detected by means of listening apparatus the presence of a submarine underwater while the destroyer was participating with other warships in manoeuvres.

The destroyer communicated with the submarine and ordered. the latter to come to the surface, but the submariné commander declined, in spite of the fact that altogether twenty signals order- ing her to rise were sent.

TANKS BLOWN. Wolfhound then dropped a 'num- ber of depth charges in the vicinity imme- of the submarine, which diately blew her tanks and came to the surface, where the commander was interrogated from the deck of the destroyer.

A "flight of imagination” was the description applied to the in- cident by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. A. Duff Cooper, when urgent questions were put to him in the House yesterday evening.

The submarine, he added, was actually proceeding up the English Channel on the surface.

She was opposite Portland Bill, but outside British territorial waters, when naval manoeuvres were being carried out by part of the Home Fleet:

The depth charge was "in con- nection with the British sub- marine Swordfish and had nothing whatever to do with the German vessel.
