News of the Japanese Govern ment's decision to revalue the Bank of Japan's gold stocks came too late. to affect the London market yester day, but bankers with Far Eastern connexions at present are engaged in discussing the implications of the matter.

Coming as a complete surprise. and at such a moment, some well- informed quarters naturally connect the action of the Tokyo Government with the present Sino-Japanese situation, but the view is now grow- ing that some defence fund for the yen may be necessary in order
