ANNIVERSARY OF CIVIL WAR OUTBREAK

London, To-day.

The anniversary of the out- break of the Spanish civil war in- spired a number of leading arti- cles in the British press yester- day.

The "Morning Post" says that it must now be clear that the Spanish civil war has never been a "struggle between a Constitutional Govern- ment and the reactionary insurgent army but that it originated in carefully planned and organised Red revolution.

a

The paper states that it may be said that if any Power had a hand in kindling the

ar it was neither Italy nor Germany but Rus- sia.

The Spaniards therefore had no choice but to fight to the bitter end or to submit tamely to a Red re- gime.

After attacking horrors com- mitted Red Spain, the journal says that General Franco now con- trols 12,500,000 Spaniards, against the 9,000,000 under the Government. General Franco also has complete control of the sea.

FACTS ADMITTED BY FOREIGN SECRETARY IN HOUSE OF COMMONS

London, To-day.

Both sides in the Spanish civil war have now expressed opposition to continuation of non-inter- vention.

General Francisco Franco strongly rejects the new British compromise proposals and is not likely to discuss withdrawal of volunteers..

The Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, announced in the House of Commons yesterday that the British Ambassador at Hendaye, had been instructed to demand the release of the steam- er "Moulton" and her crew, seiz- ed by the insurgents.

The Government, he added, would hold the Franco authorities respon- sible for any injury or damage sus- tained.

Mr. Eden stated that the "Moul- ton" had been chartered by the Basque Government for the purpose of evacuating refugees from San- the tander to French ports, and vessel was returning to Santander in ballast when captured.
