Heavy rains are believed to have been respon- sible for a tragic collapse in No. 5 Tunnel in the Marsman mine at Needle Hill yesterday, when two men were buried by a heavy fall just inside the tunnel.

One of the men (Wai Sap-luk) was rescued by fellow workers, suf- fering from injuries to his

and body, but the other who was only reached after half an hour of strenuous digging was already dead.

He was

TEMPORARY PROPS

to

It is understood that the tunnel was only in the preliminary stages of development, being propped up and it is with temporary props, believed that the increased weight above caused by heavy rains caus- ed their collapse.

The mine, known as Mine 39, at Needle Hill, in the Tsun Wan Dis- trict, is being worked by the Mars- man interests for wolfram ore.

The collapse occurred at about noon yesterday and the body of the dead man, Chan Hai-nam, was re- covered shortly after 12.30 p.m.
